I enquired about puppies and the sellers (Lorna Nixon) outright refused to sign a standard "puppy contract". In my opinion, the reasons she gave were shady.
Lorna claimed that her family have been breeding poms for over 40 years and that contracts of sale have never been the norm. However, the RSCPA and the Kennel Club strongly advise all buyers to have a written contract. In fact, the Kennel Club require that all members of their assured breeder scheme use their template contract of sale. To go against the recommendations of two of the most prestigious animal and dog organisations takes breath-taking arrogance! Unbelievable! The KC and RSCPA would certainly take a dim view at her shoddy practices.
Lorna further claims that these contracts are "not worth the weight which they are written on". This is completely groundless. Puppy contracts (essentially contracts of sale are legally binding) and ensure that all crucial information is provided to the owner. Therefore, by not signing a contract, the seller avoids all liability. This is exactly why rogue breeders and puppy farm sellers don't provide contracts! They have no responsibility when their sold pups drop dead after two days.
Be careful and purchase your dogs from someone who follows KC and RSPCA advice and respects consumer protection.
